10/10/2008Regeneration of Cumnock Town Centre and talk of an out of town retailing development

Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of the Council wishes to allay community fears that an out of town retailing development will be included in the plans for the regeneration of Cumnock Town Centre.

Councillor Reid said: "The regeneration of Cumnock Town Centre is a top priority for East Ayrshire Council and is being implemented by a joint venture company consisting of the Council in partnership with a private sector developer. The project includes the development of new office accommodation, upgrading and extending the Glaisnock Shopping Centre including the development of a supermarket, additional car parking and improved traffic management. In addition, public realm and streetscape improvements will complement the development work and will considerably enhance the town centre.

"The overall objectives of the regeneration project are:

  • to bring more jobs into the town centre;
  • to enhance and extend the available retail offer;
  • to enhance the public realm and the town centre environment; and
  • to implement improved traffic management and a parking strategy.

"In compliance with national and local planning policy and the Council's approved town centre regeneration strategy, the Council is committed to the development of town centre retailing. A key element of the Cumnock Town Centre Regeneration Project is the development of a new supermarket within the town centre. Out of town retailing is not an option for this project and in policy terms is not supported by the Council.

"This is a very exciting time for Cumnock. The regeneration project will make Cumnock a more vibrant place to live, work and visit by bringing more jobs into the town centre. We have a much brighter future ahead with this level of activity and investment."
