18/11/2008Inspectors praise Cumnock Academy - one of the best reports in Scotland, ever

Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education (HMIe) published a first class report today on Cumnock Academy.

Thought to be one of the best reports ever published in Scotland, the head teacher, staff and pupils earned high praise. The report describes "the strong lead given by the headteacher and senior managers to improving the school." Pupils are "friendly and confident young people who are actively involved in the school and community" and there are "very positive relationships and mutual respect between adults in the school and learners."

The report lists a number of key strengths, and awards the school four "very good" ratings in the areas of 'improvements in performance'; 'learners' experiences'; 'meeting learning needs' and 'the curriculum'. An "excellent" rating was given in the area of 'improvement through self-evaluation'.

Numerous examples of good practice are listed in the report. It particularly highlights the school's approaches to improving literacy skills across the school and the way the staff support school leavers into further education and employment. The commitment of all staff in the school to improving the quality of young people's learning was described as "outstanding" and it was noted that young people's health and well being has been improving in recent years due to this commitment. Also recognised in the report is the raised attainment within the school. The number of pupils achieving at least five Credit level awards is significantly above the Authority average and the report also highlights the improvement in the school's Higher results.

In terms of the future, the report states that "staff know the school very well and have a very clear idea of how to build on its considerable strengths and where things need to be improved." As a result of this, the HMIe inspection team will not make any more visits to the school in connection with this inspection.

Councillor Iain Linton, Spokesperson for Lifelong Learning, said: "I am pleased that the staff and the pupils at Cumnock have been recognised by this excellent report. The report is testament to their hard work and is a tremendous example of how the Council's investment in education is paying off. I congratulate Cumnock Academy and look forward to seeing the school go from strength to strength."

Head Teacher, Gordon Bell, added: "I am extremely proud to be Headteacher of such a wonderful school. I am delighted that the inspection team have recognised the outstanding commitment of all staff to helping our pupils do their very best. The hard work and determination of our pupils and the support of parents have been central to this success."

School captains Jordan Fleming and Katie MacKay said: "We have always known that the teachers in the school are brilliant. It's great that the inspectors have agreed what a fantastic school this is."

Let's all congratulate Cumnock Academy on this brilliant report - just click the Comment button!
