22/8/2008East Ayrshire Streetsport Cages reach UK final

StreetSport Cages, which are part of the Leisure Development Services of East Ayrshire Council, have been nominated for the prestigious Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) Service Award for Best Community & Neighbourhood Initiative. StreetSport Cages will be competing against six other public service initiatives from throughout the UK.

StreetSport Cages, popular among the youth of Cumnock, are the Council's unique network of multi-use games areas and is run in partnership with the Council's Outdoor Services section, Anti Social Behaviour Team and the local Police.

Building on the Council's well established reputation for utilising new, dynamic and innovative approaches to developing and promoting community sport, these facilities have revolutionised the area's Sport Development provision. Through involvement at StreetSport Cages young people can have fun and take part in competition but they will also learn some basic skills such as teamwork, respect and leadership, skills that will certainly come in handy in adult life!

The real impact of this initiative is demonstrated by Police records which indicate a 46% reduction in youth related complaints in the 12 months following installation of the majority of StreetSport Cages when compared to the previous 12 months.

The APSE Service Awards are dedicated to recognising excellence in front line local government public services and this year's APSE awards have attracted over 350 entries from authorities throughout the UK. Entrants needed to impress a panel of judges made up of industry experts and professionals who looked at how the local authorities have performed on improving public services and the benefits to local communities.

Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of the Council said: "StreetSport Cages provide an excellent opportunity for young people to participate in sport virtually on their own doorsteps. These facilities are supported by our local Police and Community Wardens who recognise the benefits of the positive activities being provided to young people."

This locally valued community service has a real track record of achievement having been nationally recognised on previous occasions, raising the profile of East Ayrshire Council and partners in terms of innovation and best practice.

The awards ceremony will be held on 11 September at the Albert Halls, Nottingham.
