4/11/2008Come walk with us: New walking group launched in Cumnock

The sun smiled for the launch of the new C.A.T.C.H. Walking Group in Cumnock as Councillor Kathy Morrice, East Ayrshire Council's spokesperson on Community Wellbeing, joined the first participants on their walk.

The Cumnock walks leave from the local Health Centre every Wednesday morning, at 11.00am, come rain or shine.

C.A.T.C.H (Community Activity to Community Health) now supports 18 walking groups throughout East Ayrshire. These walks are low level, easy, local routes and last for less than an hour. However, they are invaluable in helping people get more active and improving their mental wellbeing.

The programme is open to all, in particular people who take little or no exercise, and is developed in stages from totally sedentary to physically active.

Participants need no special clothing or footwear but are advised to dress for comfort and to be prepared for the changeable Scottish weather.

Councillor Morrice said: "The long term aim of this project is to initiate walking programmes that contribute to reducing coronary heart disease and stroke and increasing activity as part of daily life. The walks are great social events as well - one walker even brought their dog along. Everyone, regardless of age, is welcome and I hope this group grows over the coming months."
