Christmas kicks off in style with Cumnock lights switch-on

Cumnock has kicked off the festive season in style with the switch on of the town’s Christmas lights.

Despite the wind and rain, hundreds braved the weather to enjoy the festivities and live music all provided by local musicians and singers.

Although the event had to move into the Glaisnock Shopping Centre – a change from the planned outdoor festival, the weather did nothing to dampen the Christmas spirit as Billy DJ expertly compered the event. Performances from pupils at Cumnock Academy, the East Ayrshire Traditional Music Group, CAMPS, the Cumnock Chorus and the Cumnock Girls ‘Glee’ Group showcased the breadth of talent in the area.

Cartoon characters, magician and Owl Magic entertained the kids whilst the outdoor fun fair proved popular despite the weather outside.

A small Christmas market with stall holders ranging from Cumnock Academy and Buns R’ Us to local retailers such as Sloanes and Cards n’ Things. The pupils from Cumnock Academy did a roaring trade in Christmas decorations, home baking and other festive goodies.

Provost Stephanie Young switched on the Christmas Lights– they were especially bright, including the new lights in the precinct funded by Cumnock Community Council and the Minerals Trust.

Provost Young also picked the winners of the Shop Local Christmas Promotion.

Kathryn Howell, Town Centre Manager said “We had a great response to the promotion this year with over 1900 entries – this is an increase on last year’s 1600 entries. The winner received £200 worth of Cumnock Shopping Vouchers and 19 runners up won £50 worth of vouchers. Dumfries House generously supplied an extra prize for this year’s promotion – a free dinner for two at their Candlelight Tour on 16th December. All the winners will be notified this week.

‘The Christmas event and promotion worked really well this year and once again, the people of Cumnock have really supported their town centre. Despite the weather, hundreds came out to support the Christmas Switch On event. We’re always trying to encourage people to “Shop Local” in Cumnock and it was great to see the shoppers and traders enjoying such a busy afternoon with a lovely festive atmosphere.’
