Why Saint Conval?

by Geoff Crolley

1) What is the story behind St Conval being the patron saint of Cumnock?

2) When did he become the patron saint of Cumnock?

3) Is he the patron saint of New Cumnock?

4) Is he the patron saint of the whole of Nithsdale?

5) Are both Kirkconnel's on the banks of the Nith named after him?

I found the Kyle Society site at: http://kylehistory.tripod.com/history.htm and was immediately struck by the coat of arms: three candles. Take a look at that, then read on here.

Candle, in Kyle Regis (East Ayrshire) is pronounced, Conn'l.
There is a type of coal named Candle (Conn'l) coal.
New Cumnock an ex-mining town, has a "Connel Park" and Connel Burn".
Connel Burn and the river Nith both have their source at Enoch Hill. St Enoch being the mother of St Mungo. St Mungo trained St Conval (Connel).
The Nith flows from New Cumnock, passing through Kirkconnel which lies below the ancient St Connel's church.
One of the ancient names of Cumnock is ComENOCH.
The Baron of Comenoch in 1296 was Patrick Dunbar, who, according to Blind Harry, called William Wallace "The King Of Kyle".
The patron saint of Cumnock and Nithsdale is St Conval.
The seal on the Lubeck Letter states that William Wallace was the son of Alan Wallace. An Alan Wallace was a tenant of Kyle Regis (Comenoch barony).

The Kyle Society want to use the blue and white check on their new coat of arms. That would represent Stewart Kyle not KYLE.

How many Connels and Enochs were there and has Cumnock's St Conval been laid off?

Not far South of Cumnock there are:
Connel Burn, Connel Park, Kirkconnel (x2), Conal's Kirk (remains of), St Connel's Chapel (remains of), Connel's Well and Kirkconnel Burn.

One St Enoch, was also known as Kennocha V & KYLE (died in 1007).
She was a Scottish nun of the convent in Fife. Yes Enoch eas a wuman.

Was St Enoch the origin of KYLE?

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
