The Memory of Arthur Will Ever Be Held Grateful Remembrance in New Cumnock. Aye, Right

by Geoff Crolley

Who was Arthur of the Arthur Memorial?

There were three brothers: John, William and Alex.

John Findlay Arthur was born at Creoch, New Cumnock in 1807,

William Arthur was born in New Cumnock in 1810 and

Alexander Arthur was born in New Cumnock in 1817

The youngest: John Findlay Arthur: was most likely born at Lochside House, New Cumnock [Addison 1727-1897 reads: CSI Walkside House, New Cumnock] http://www.universitystory.gla.ac.uk/browse-graduates/?start=440&max=20&l=A

[John Findlay Arthur was born on 17 January 1807 and gained the M.D. in 1831 and C.M. (Glasgow) in 1836. Appointed an Assistant Surgeon on 14 February 1836, he was promoted to Surgeon on 29 October 1852. In the Indian Mutiny he was Surgeon to the 1st Madras Fusiliers who entered Lucknow as part of the 1st Relief Force under Sir Henry Havelock. He later served in the siege and capture of Lucknow. Arthur retired from the service with the rank of Surgeon-General in February 1860 and was awarded the C.S.I. in June 1869. Latterly a J.P. for Ayrshire, he died at New Cumnock, Ayrshire on 26 July 1886.] http://www.dnw.co.uk/medals/auctionarchive/viewspecialcollections/itemdetail.lasso?itemid=54099

I can't imagine what it was like for him in Lucknow at the time: [The hospital is so densely crowded that many have to lie outside in the open air, without bed or shelter. J. says he never saw such a heart-sickening scene. It is far worse than after Chinhut — amputated arms and legs lying about in heaps all over the hospital, and the crowd and confusion such that little can be done to alleviate the intense discomfort and pain of the poor sufferers.] http://www.archive.org/stream/ladysdiaryofsieg00harrrich/ladysdiaryofsieg00harrrich_djvu.txt

Is there any other mention of JFA being a Justice of the Peace in Ayrshire?

His medals; C.S.I; The Most Exalted Order of the Star of India; Companion’s breast badge. Indian Mutiny 1857-59. On offer for £4000-5000.

Are these coincidences?
Gold was first discovered in the Peak Hill area in 1889?
A large gold deposit was discovered in Peak Hill by William John Wilson in 1892.
Curra, mentioned above, is very near Black Rock [north of] Cumnock, NSW. The Cumnock/Baldry Road to Peak Hill [west] leads to Castle St [east]. See:

Memories, Nostalgia & History

History doesn't have to be in black & white

Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
