I liked this:
What is the problem with us when it comes to commemorating events or people?
I'm really into tourism and am always surprised at how little we use "events in time" to induce people to come to the area.
2009:
250th anniversary of Burns' Birth
250th anniversary of Dumfries House
220th anniversary of Burns being evicted from Whighams' inn
500th anniversary of Cumnock becoming a barony of Burgh
350th anniversary of Comenoc becoming New Cumnock
170th anniversary of the true bicycle
I went to France last year and was astounded to find that the small villages around where I was based held an annual RL Stevenson walk, now in its 12th year. Amazing.
On the 25th of January Scotland has a chance to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Burns' birth, Ayrshire and Dumfriesshire should have been pulling out all the stops. Every settlement with a Burns connection could light a beacon or bonfire at 8 o'clock that night. What a sight that would be on GoogleEarth.
On the 10th of September next year, Cumnock and New Cumnock should be celebrating being made a burgh of barony, seeing as they didn't separate until 1659, another celebration.
The Tour of Britain should come up or down the A76 in 2009 because the bicycle was invented near Drumlanrig 170 years ago. Everybody grab your bike and celebrate the occasion.
I'm putting this out on as many sites as I can because I believe in it.
Wasn't it Cumnock Castle which was the main part of the parish of Cumnock in 1509. I don't even know if I can find (Old) Cumnock on any maps at that time. Therefore, shouldn't New Cumnock have been celebrating its quincentenial?
The problem ? Weel in the words of the master "all tell yi this boy" Mongrel Politicians they wans wi a Unionist bent, they will never celebrate any thing, what so ever ti dae wi Scots People or Places. They by the way wid rather wi hid nae Scots Inventors . nae Burns or Scott, no even oor ain Robert Taylor no only the manager / proprietor o the Cumnock Pottery , bit yip the true inventor of Steam Navigation. Wha wis it that got rid of oor Wallace frae the headed note paper in Stirling council, yip mair Mongrel Tory Politicians . So ti all politicians gies a brek n lets celebrate being Scots, we have a history n heritage which is unrivalled any where else in the world. Do it the noo afore its finally AIR BRUSHED OOT O HISTORY.
Sorry. For some reason I stated above that Cumnock was raised to Burgh of Barony on the 10th of September 1509 when in fact it was on the 27th September 1509. So we still have 17 days to get ready. Aye right.
It's great to see some movement towards commemorating the quincentenary but with only a week to go it's not being advertised enough.
The Baird Institute in Cumnock, Ayrshire on September 26th at 11:00.

For an event which was rushed, it was well worth it. What's next? Google : Cumnock 500
Your memory of a local character or a school photo from the last ten years can be just as interesting as wars and Victorians.
