Cumnock (Cumnag in Gaelic) is in East Ayrshire on the River Lugar, 14 miles from Kilmarnock. William Wallace allegedly lived in Cumnock for a short time and nearby Terringzean Castle probably dates from the 15th century. Other historic monuments of note include Dumfries House and Cumnock's Mercat Cross. Cumnock and the surrounding area was at various times home to leading Covenanter Alexander Peden and conventicles were held - and persecuted - on the surrounding moors. James Keir Hardie, founder of the Scottish Labour Party, lived here and the former mining town has a strong socialist heritage. Cumnock is home to a community of nearly 10 000 people and s1cumnock.com has been developed to allow residents share their news, views and opinions, make announcements, publicise events and show off their photos and videos.
